Get Rid Of Conduit Search

Posted By Roger Feinstein On April 2, 2017 @ 11:32 am In Viruses And Malware | No Comments

One of the most annoying things that can happen to a computer user is the appearance of spyware and adware – seemingly out of nowhere.  The Conduit search “toolbar” and browser hijacker is one of the most common versions of this.  It tends to pop up out of nowhere – many times users really have no idea where it came from until they open their browser to find their home page and default search bar changed.

This particular adware infection happened to me recently after downloading a free program that I needed in order to open .rar file extensions.  I had downloaded the software from what I thought was a fairly reputable source – CNET.com.  However in my rush (I was trying to finish a video project and desperately needed to open the .rar file) I did not notice that the software was installing adware on my computer.  In my defense, sometimes you never see it coming as they don’t even warn you or give you the option of installing it or not.  However sometimes it’s a small check box on the installation screen.

I didn’t even realize it was there until I opened Firefox and saw a rather different home page (it used to be the Firefox Google search home page):

Regardless of how this annoying thing infected my computer, I had to get rid of it.  Conduit is fairly common and not super dangerous, but I can’t be sure what’s going on my computer with programs like these.  I was afraid to use any passwords or do any online shopping with that on my system.

I wanted to make sure I got ALL the pieces of the software out.  I just didn’t trust myself to do it manually, and I didn’t have the time to sit down and follow a long list of instructions about how to manually remove all the various changes it made.

I ended up running the old faithful Spyhunter 4 software to get rid of it.  It found it right away:

Removal with the software only took a few minutes, and my Firefox was returned to normal.

I’m a little embarrassed to be writing this first person account, as I’m usually pretty smart about what I install on my PC and where I get my software and downloads.  However, mistakes and hijacks happen even to the best of us.  Sometimes you just can’t help it!

In any case, I definitely recommend using Spyhunter for this kind of situation, and especially if you’re having an issue with Conduit.
